Turn in the road

The Examiner will ask you to stop on the side of the road. Make sure it is a safe place i.e. not on double yellow lines, not covering a driveway or entrance, not opposite a parked car or traffic island, not opposite a junction. When he asks you to do a turn in the road look to see if the road has drains on both sides or not. This will tell you whether you have a double camber (one up, one down) or a single camber (a slope either up or down).

There is no finesse with this manoeuvre it is all brute force.

Select first gear, find biting point. Do a 6 point check if clear of pedestrians and vehicles, release hand brake and very quickly turn the steering wheel full lock to the right keep the car slow. Keep looking round for people or cars.

When the kerb on your right appears under the corner of your door mirror (between the top of the door and the bottom of the mirror) turn the steering wheel full lock to the left. If you have kept the car slow you will have plenty of time to do this before you hit the kerb. If you do not have time turn as much as you can. Do not hit the kerb. Stop and put on the hand brake.

Select reverse and find biting point, do a 6 point check, if clear release the hand brake.

If you have full lock just let the car come back slowly if not then put the rest of the turn on. Look around all the time over both shoulders.

When the car is straight across the road turn the steering wheel full lock to the right, again if you are slow enough you will have enough room, if not do not hit the kerb behind you stop and apply hand brake.

Select first gear and find biting point do a 6 point check if clear release hand brake and drive out turning the steering wheel as needed.

Remember you can take 5 shunts to do this all you do is reverse back on shunt 4 turning the steering wheel to the left, then pull forward turning the steering wheel to the right doing all the appropriate 6 point checks and observations.

Remember this is a Class manoeuvre:

  • Is it Convenient.
  • Is it Legal.
  • Are you Able.
  • Is it Safe and Sound.

Everybody and everything has priority over you, stop and let them go if they have room.
